converting analogue music to mp3 format

    Hello,

I wish to convert some of my old taped music to mp3. When I used to use windows I had some software to do this. I used the headphone output socket of a portable tape player connected to the microphone input input of my laptop, and used the software to convert the input to mp3.

Does anyone know of any open source software that will provide this functionality for ubuntu linux?

    I am running ubuntu 8.04.

    All suggestions gratefully received.

    regards

I'd start by taking a look at Audacity

    sudo apt-get install audacity

    or search in synaptic
