run gstreamer-properties (for Totem Movie Player) or go into the vlc video output preferences, and change the video output method to X11 (it might be listed as "no xv" in gstreamer preferences) - it'll use a little more processing power (translated: your battery will die faster if you're playing videos away from an outlet), but it should fix any problems with compiz messing up your video output - your video should continue playing even if you activate scale or the cube.

That's the reason why you don't have direct rendering.
You don't need Xgl with an intel chip, remove it:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove xserver-xgl
Then restart X and try again.

Yea, xgl is no good with the x3100, change that to AIGLX and I bet it's good to go. I sort of had an inkling that it was that from the start but figured it was smarter to go through everything incrementally

    Re: Hardy intel x3100

I have a Toshiba Tecra M8 with the Intergrated Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. Output of my compiz-check:

    Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04
    Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
    Driver in use: intel
    Rendering method: AIGLX

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...

    Checking for texture_from_pixmap... [ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support... [ OK ]
Checking for composite extension... [ OK ]
Checking for FBConfig... [ OK ]
    Checking for hardware/setup problems... [ OK ]

I am having no problems with Ubuntu itself, but games such as Glest, Supertuxkart, etc are causing my computer to freeze up. Could someone offer me some advice on how to make them work? Btw, I am completely new to Ubuntu and Linux in general.
