Error message forcing me to use WinXP to fix my HDD??

I get an error message every time I boot Ubuntu [7.10] that asks of me to use chdsk to fix an ntfs partition and it tell me to do something "TWICE" and not to forget the f parameter. Do I really need to install Windows? If the worst happens, I'll install it virtually but then I'll encounter the same problem I had before which is getting USB devices to be detected in virtualbox. Virtualbox-ose can't detect USB but I also seem to have problems with the non-ose version. Can someone help me please?

    Thanks in advance!
