The only difference between original and now specs are 4 gigs RAM and upgraded CPU to 1.83 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" (T5600) processor. Ubuntu 14.04 just flies on this old laptop and everything works impeccably!

Does an IBM T40 with a going backlight (so I have to use an external monitor) count? It's got 2 hard drives (Windows 7 & openSUSE 13.1 KDE). Actually it has 3 hard drives (Xubuntu 12.04).

But I am setting up my workbench and am planning on throwing Ubuntu 14.04 on it to try it out (P4, 2GB Ram) before I update the family Optiplex from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.

    P4 3.0GHz (775)
    4GB RAM
    On board graphics.
    1TB HD.

Not really a fast runner but it does the job with Xubuntu 14.04.

My main rig is a 2006 Dell Inspiron E1705.

    Intel dual-core 2.0 GHz.
    2 GB RAM.
    Upgraded to 1 TB HDD.

    Battery is shot
    Replaced screen and GPU once.

It's been through a lot, but it's still ticking!

I have a 2007 Lenovo Thinkpad R61i running 14.04. I received it last Christmas, actually. I instantly became enamored with the solid design aesthetic and the little latch on the lid. Also, at the time, it had 12.04 installed onto it. It was my first cup of Ubuntu...

The last two are in my basement along with my router (another self-built Linux box) to keep the noise contained. Also in the basement: a 4-bay QNAP NAS.

I been considering getting the base model Mac Pro. I just feel I could do more with a single midrange Radeon or geforce card then two D300's.. Then again my L2012 Mini only has the HD4000 aka High Disappointment 4000.. But since the mini is due for an update, like soon(tm).. Waiting to see what gets changed..

    I'm using a 2013 HP Envy 15TS!

    Intel i5 Processor
    NVidia GT 740M
    8GB RAM
    750GB SATA Hardrive
Beats Audio? - basically a gimmick but the speakers have a nice full sound to them.

And it came running Windows 8.1, but I swapped that for Ubuntu 14.04LTS

It says in your post/signature that you're a photog. If that's true, I'm not really sure how beneficial a new Mac Pro would be just yet. Photoshop can take advantage of GPGPU processing for certain things. Lightroom: not so much. I have no idea if Aperture does or not, but my gut tells me: no. In the future? I expect Photoshop's GPGPU use to expand. I expect Adobe to start doing OpenCL things with Lightroom. And if Apple were smart, they'd start overhauling Aperture to do the same.
