problems booting into live cd or installing

i dont know if it is the image or cd's i keep burning but every time i try to run the live version of ubuntu or even to just install it it errors out on me and says something about sh/bin not being found and some process was terminated. ive checked my image before burning and it looks fine. i use md5sum to check it. but i cant figure out how to check the image once ive burned it... any suggestions?

im running an hp m7060n, pentium 4 3Ghz, 1 gig ram with a 200 and 400 gig hard drives installed and running windows xp media center. any other specs needed just ask. also this is for ubuntu 8.04

The only tricky part of using a live cd is manually partitioning. It is not hard, but the first time or two can be a bit hard. If you need help with that, then please start a thread on that.
