Re: HOWTO: Surround sound in pulseaudio

I have a doubt here. The whole how to seems to be based on the fact that each of those surround sound speakers enter a port on the back side of the cpu.
In my case, I have a Creative 4.1 speaker set, where only two jacks enter the CPU ( which are connected to the sub-woofer) and the 4 smaller speakers have their input coming from from the subwoofer. So does this how-to work for me?

    Hi, s_spiff

I have a Creative Inspire T6060 5.1 Speaker System; subwoofer has 3 jacks connected to the sound card, and every speaker connects to the subwoofer

If that was your concern, I assure you that you won't have any problem

Note: I don't think your jacks are connected to the CPU... maybe you meant your pc case

    Hi
as I know vlc pulseaudio plugin does not have implemented support for any thing else than stereo. I should be easy to implement it.

I could have the skills to implement that (optimistic view ), but sure I don't have the time, right now

Reporting back. I have achieved success.

I rolled everything back, and then the only thing I modified was the daemon.conf. Reloaded PA, and still the same issue. I had front, center, and sub...

I then opened up alsamixer, and played around with all the permutations I could think of. Finally, all it took was to select the surround mode as not "shared" (sorry, not in front of my HTPC, I'll have to double check).

After I made this change, I had full 5.1. Perfect.

    All is well now .

Thanks for the support; this is why we love Linux.

Where did you see this option for surround sound mode? In alsamixer?

Can you let me know so I can put it in the howto?

Re: HOWTO: Surround sound in pulseaudio

Yep, Sam, it's in alsamixer (or gnome-volume-control, under Switches)

I had to specify "shared", while Tomás had to specify "independent"; so it depends on the hardware, from what I can tell

    MemoryDump:

That sort of usage of pulseaudio is way out of the scope of this guide - I haven't got the foggiest on how to help you I'm afraid

For that sort of thing, you will probably have better luck asking on IRC, or possibly starting a new thread.
