I have many photos in JPEG, PNG, GIF formats. I'd like to make a slide show of these photos. What are some of the good tools for doing this in (Ubuntu) Linux ?
Thanks.

I use Picasa, it makes nice slideshows. You can also try Open Movie Editor.
Cheers
Can you add video to the slide show if you use Picasa ? I want to do this for YouTube.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean, Picasa can be used to make a slideshow movie from several images.
If you want what I think though, you can first make a movie with Picasa using images, then use that movie in a new project in Open Movie Editor (I think it's in the repo's) so you can add sounds, music and add other movies in it.
If you really want something beautiful, you could make the movie in cinelerra, but I'm not sure how that works exactly, haven't tinkered around with it much yet.
Cheers
I have tried cinelerra and open movie editor and get 5 G files with just a picture and no sound that are completly useless!
Have you tried this? --> http://www.getdeb.net/app/Smile
I tried Smile... doesn't seem to import video into the slide show.
Dell Zino HD, AMD Neo X2 e6850, 8GB, 750GB, ATI HD4330 in MXM slot.
Kdenlive, anybody tried using this program? Im trying to get it to work for me but I heard it is similar to the windows mov maker.
I've had limited success with Kdenlive, seems it works better on KDE than Gnome, but perhaps they have fixed this since last I looked. I've had slightly better luck with OpenShot Movie Editor, but to be flat out honest, you must have a whole lot more free time than money to mess with Video Editing on Linux as opposed to setting up a dual boot Windows system and using something like $70 Sony Vegas Movie Studio.
Maybe in a year or two I can stop saying this, as progress is being made, but if you need to actually get video editing done, sad to say Linux is not really there yet unless ogg/theora meets all your needs.

Use ffmpeg

Pick out the code and you will find you can do just about anything with video, including making slideshows from photos, and then combining the slideshow video with other video. Then upload to youtube and let them do the rest.
[EDIT]
Also photofilmstrip and openshot (in repos)
