[SOLVED] Need to reinstall NVidia driver on EVERY reboot

I've been trying to get the NVidia driver to work on Hardy on my Dell Latitude D820 laptop with NVidia Quadro NVS 110M, with moderate success.

Initially without the NVidia driver it worked okay, with the expected resolution, just no graphical eye candy.

I installed the NVidia driver by running the installer from the NVidia website (not the nvidia-glx-new package) and that seemed to work fine... until I rebooted. Upon rebooting, I was greeted with an 800x600 desktop and the message that it couldn't detect my display correctly. So I exited out to the terminal and reinstalled the NVidia driver like I did before and it was fine again... until the next reboot and the same thing happened.

I keep getting this in the Xorg.0.log file:
    Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
    (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
    (II) UnloadModule: "wfb"
    (II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
I then uninstalled that driver and tried the nvidia-glx-new driver without success, as I'd get the same error upon reboot (although I didn't try reinstalling that driver right away upon bootup as I did the other). So now I'm back to just reinstalling the NVidia driver from the installer from NVidia's website every time I reboot, which is pretty annoying.

The xorg.conf file doesn't change at all each time I reinstall the driver, and here are the contents of that file:
    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Thu Feb 14 18:20:37 PST 2008

Did you uninstalled using the same file you installed? ie. --uninstall

    Yes I uninstalled the driver via `sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall`.

I've had this problem before. Try uninstalling nvidia-kernel-common, that might fix it. I think it conflicts with compiled nvidia drivers.

    Thanks, that did the trick.
