    Missing desktop after update!

I've updated recently to 8.04 and everything seemed to be going fine until today. I downloaded and installed the latest updates, which required me to restart my PC. After logging back in on the startup screen, my desktop was completely missing.

I am able to right click and see a small menu, and I can see the default wallpaper. However I can't see any of the normal menus or any of my icons, so basically I can't really do anything. I've tried rebooting a few times and it stays the same.

    What can I do?

Maybe you should post in the section on desktop effects and customization?

I have a feeling the pros might hang around there somewhere

Still haven't solved this issue. I've done updates through the terminal but my desktop is still gone. Help!

Go to the terminal by pressing CTRL + ALT + F1 and issue the command sudo rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity to reset to default settings.
Steady movement is more important than speed, much of the time. So long as there is a regular progression of Stimuli to get your mental hooks into, there is room for lateral movement. Once this begins, its rate is a matter of discretion.

Ok I did that and it remains the same. I even tried installing the Xubuntu desktop and that didnt work either. I guess I'll have to reformat...

I reformatted mine. But I doubt how can you see the wallpaper. I just had a orange background with two panels.

I edited the original post. The wallpaper I see is just the default one.
