resetting password for administrator

I just purchased a used desktop from Goodwill which has their default username and password for administrator. It had an older version of ubuntu so I upgraded to 12.10 and now the password does not work. Had to log on as guest user.
How do I reset the password?

After googling my question, I attempted to reboot while holding down the shift key to get into the boot menu and then the recovery mode, but after multiple tries, it will not go into the boot menu.

What am I missing here???????

Some times rather than holding the shift key. quickly hitting the shift key numerous times works.
What version is installed ? Very old versions used the escape key rather than the shift key to get to the grub menu.

Hitting the shift key repeatedly while booting worked great - all is well - thanks so much for the tip I have version 12.04

If you just acquired a used system, I would would wipe it clean and just install your favorite flavor of Ubuntu onto the machine.
