I just built a new computer last week, with the main requirements:
- fast
- best bang for the buck, i.e. knee in the price-performance curve.
- quiet -- use 120mm fans and quiet components
- integrated graphics ok -- I don't care about 3D
- case as small as possible, but not to the deteriment of any of the above requirements.
I picked Intel 45 nm E8400 Core 2 Duo chip because smaller process gives you more power for less wattage/heat, and also you can overclock it on air.
I picked NSK2480 case because it is a nice size for workstation and has good design for cooling the processor with big 120 mm fans blowing right on it. It uses a micro ATX motherboard.
I threw a quiet HD and also some OCZ memory with a heat sink (good if you want to overclock).
I am using the onboard Intel graphics since I don't care about 3D graphics. If you want better graphics, you will need to add a PCIx16 Express video card.
Or, another option is to pay $5 and get the Intel x3500 integrated in the Intel BOXDG35EC LGA 775 Intel G35 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard. I didn't notice this board at the time I ordered my components; Otherwise I probably would have bought the Intel mobo rather than the Gigabtye mobo since Intel has better graphics for about the same price.
Configuration
I put the box together in about 3 hours. Initially it wouldn't boot up, due the 4pin power connector being loose. After fixing that, it booted up fine, and I popped in my Ubuntu 8.04 64bit Desktop installation CD, and I had a the system up and running in about 30 minutes. Everything worked out-of-the-box with no problems. I did have to install the "restricted" package to get MP3 and adobe flash to work, but I had no hardware compatability problems.
The next night I installed Virtual Box 1.6.0, and then I installed Windows XP from a slipstreamed Wincows XP SP3 DVD, and I got that also working with zero problems! I still need WIndows XP because my company's VPN remote access software only works with windows, so in order to remote desktop to my workstation at my work, I have to run windows xp in virtual box, and then connect through the VPN, and then run remote desktop. I was pleasantly surpised it all worked great!
So, I thought I'd share my configuration with everyone in case someone else is looking to build a new box to run Ubuntu 8.04 with requirements similar to mine.
Following is the component list.
