    applications start with blank window

I'm having a really annoying issue with my 8.04 installation. After I'm logged in for several hours, when I start applications, they appear with a blank window. That is, the application window appears with the proper title bar, but the contents of the window are missing. When I click on the "X" to close the application, it doesn't close immediately but instead I am asked to "Force Quit". When this happens, if I try to log out, the system freezes up.

I can then ctrl+Alt+F1 to a console and restart gdm. However, upon logging in after that, the entire screen is blank. I have no idea what this can be, but it is truly a pain for me as the only solution is to reboot.

I've attached a system profile, as output by sysinfo for more information on my setup. I should let you know that I am using the nvidia restricted driver on 2 videocards driving 3 screens. Not sure if this is part of the issue.

Please let me know if you want any more info or have any suggestions. Thanks!

    -Jay

Re: applications start with blank window

I am having the same problem. I have investigated the possibility of it being a Compiz/video ram problem. I do not think it is. Once exhibited, I can disable compiz, and terminate the affected processes, and try to start a new gnome terminal, gedit, or totem-xine, and the windows still open blank. I think it is important to point out that this bug seems to only affect "gnome" applications. Generic X applications or KDE applications appear to be unaffected. I can for example, start a copy of xterm and use it, even with compiz on, once this bug has been triggered, but I cannot start any new gnome-terminals (although existing gnome-terminals still function until I close them.) I also cannot open the "print screen" utility to make a screenshot once the bug has been triggered. I can close and re-open Firefox, but not gedit. If I have a gedit currently opened, I can use it, and I can even save changes, I believe, but if I try to "save as" or do anything that opens a new window (of a certain type only-- I can't recall if save as is actually the one that causes trouble) then that window comes up blank, and the rest of gedit freezes up at that point as well.

Logging out and logging back in does not help. Restarting GDM does not help. Turning off compiz does not help. But, doing a full reboot fixes the problem.

P.S. This began to happen occasionally sometime in march. It seems to have become a lot worse in the past two weeks. I can only presume it broke with a certain update. I have been running since Feisty, and upgraded to Gutsy the week it came out.

Re: applications start with blank window

Thought I should chime in, of note I am a Linux newb though.

It happened to me using Gutsy and happens now using Hardy. Even after a fresh format and installing nothing, also though all kernels I have tried including RT kernels, after a few hours Gnome applications fail to launch (blank screen, only thing you can do is force quit).

I've never had this happen on my other computers before, just my main one, and the fact that it will happen right after a fresh install is pointing to me that it is hardware related. I'd like to try some alternates to nvidia restricted drivers, what are the options?

    My setup:

I have the same issue. Tried to kill gdm, reload nvidia module but no effect. I'm forced to reboot to wipe the problem.

Just so people know, I recently upgraded (mobo + vid card) and the problem stopped, even without a format.

    Found the problem source: ESD

I've found the problem, is the ESD process, i do a strace on gnome-terminal and found that the application hangs when read some lines from .esd-auth. Killing the ESD process made all the windows to turn alive immediately.

Anyone can do a test and confirm this behavior?

This is just a wild guess, but perhaps check that you are the owner of ~/.esd_auth (as opposed to root). Make sure you have read/write permission too.

My wild guess is if you run sudo (instead of gksu) on a graphical app maybe root overwrote your ~/.esd_auth and it became root's. Then when you as a normal user run the same app and it tries to read ~/.esd_auth you are left without proper ownership...?

I checked the permissions and seems ok:

    Code:
    -rwxrwxrwx 1 hellboyz77 hellboyz77 16 2008-06-13 21:24 .esd_auth
I use gksudo instead of gksu, but when the problem happened i don't have launched any apps with gksudo.

Also relaunching esd after killed the process work fine.
