I have to say that reading this thread has given me an uncanny sense of deja vu.
I've been struggling to get my FX 5200 working under Hardy for about a week now with now joy and almost exactly the same symptom as the thread starter.
My card was working perfectly under gutsy but since upgrading it's been a nightmare. I know one of my friends too that's really struggling.
It's true that disabling the restricted driver gets me to the giddy heights of 800x600 but nothing, including envy (which worked perfectly under gutsy) approaches that and I've tried everything suggested here including fiddling with xorg.conf which on my system looks pretty barren at the moment..
I've just tried making the change to grub but it's made no difference whatsoever. Still stuck in the land on 640 by 480.
Wah!
Chris...
I've just noticed that when starting up with the suggested grub modification that I get an error on boot: undefined video mode number 317.

Sorry, didn't help.
I've decided to get a new GFX card. Would THIS be a good buy?
that's very odd. I just tried it here and the resolution was indeed very funky (might be a Hardy thing). however, you can modify your menu.lst and include vga=791 like this instead:
I tried this and it worked.title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-17-generic root=UUID=5610c634-bc0e-4ac8-bb50-6fc28ae9e0c3 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-17-generic
vga=791
quiet

I hate to instigate you to change your graphics card, but I understand your frustration. BUT, if you're willing to spend a bit more, I would suggest these three:

The 8600GT seems to be at a very good price and it's a very nice card...

Oh yeah... sorry about that...
I would go with the 7600 but maybe go for XFX or EVGA
Just saw this one and it looks really nice:

what's your maximum?

I also have a nvidia fx 5200 and all I had to do (using hardy) was enable the restricted driver, let the system do the install, then do a system restart.
I don't recommend upgrading video cards just for this purpose, because this problem can definitely be resolved with a little bit of grease work. if you don't have anything important on your computer, then try doing a reinstall.
good luck
