I did that already... no joy
I reinstalled the python2.5 package since the python package is a meta-package (I think) and reinstalling it wouldn't really do anything.
Anyways, it didn't work... same error

I had to reinstall python2.5-minimal. I did
sudo apt-get clean
and then did a reinstall of python2.5-minimal from synaptic.
