We're looking at deploying Ubuntu onto an array of PC's that will record audio from the line-in from the sound cards.
The end result of the process will be an MP3 file that we will store and some clients will be able to access these files.
MP3 technically isn't a free codec, Ubuntu doesn't come with an MP3 codec. In order to install the MP3 codec you need to enable the "restricted" repository.
Are we allowed to use the MP3 codec to record these files and send them to clients?
(We're using MP3 for it's wide compatibility, also we're in Australia)
PS. Just to be 100% clear, I am not asking about the legality of actually recording and distributing the audio material. I am asking whether it is ok to be able to record using the MP3 codec itself on an Ubuntu system.
