    Ugh!

    Just went from bad to worse.

    So I was having this .dmrc problem and my system was freezing:

    I was able to fix that, but making the necessary permissions changes has now borked all of my audio:

    Namely, Rhythmbox, Amarok (Xine), and Totem (Movie Player) are no longer able to play anything. Totem says "GStreamer encountered a general stream error" and Amarok tells me xine could not find any audio drivers.

    Anybody got an answer on this one?

    I don't know but who's the pulseaudio expert on here?

    My Pulseaudio broke and I'm not too sure how to fix it.

    I have a few instructions I can try but I was wondering if anyone can recognize or troubleshoot based on the (error) messages.

    I did have it working initially but what is bothering me, is that it suddenly stops working and then the sound on my media player turns off.

    The volume control and meter open but nothing is shown on the meter.

    Command of :$ pulseaudio -D doesn't work either.

    I am not sure if there is anything to try. I would like to know what would stop it from working.

    Well, you know the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

    While the sound isn't necessarily "broke" on this laptop, it isn't working quite correctly. The system sounds, for instance.

    While there is a slight difference between some of the .wav files selectable for System sounds, they don't seem to be quite what they're made out to be.

    The "Siren" sounds something like a door closing (though not quite). "Clink" sounds like a clink, and so does "Beep." "Boing" sounds like a "Tink."

    Anyway, I'm going to try the steps in this HOWTO because, among other things, this is a laptop, and I'd like to try the equalizer to see if I can get the system speakers to sound a little better.

    I have definite sound problems with my desktop, but one computer at a time. Other than the System sounds (and I have a feeling that may not be a "PulseAudio" problem) I haven't really had any sound problems with this laptop. I can't get Totem to play a DVD from the player, but that's likely not a sound problem, either.

    Well, it's all done and all seems to be working. The equalizer seems to have improved things somewhat, but I know I'm going to have to go into the configuration file and change some of the numbers and fine tune it to my particular speaker system.

    And, of course...learned a little more yet.

    HOWTO: PulseAudio Fixes & System-Wide Equalizer Support - Sample of Skype Setup

    I had some issues in setting up Skype, playing around with the different settings until I had a working setup. See attached pictures.
    Other following the setup, there were no issues. Thank you very much.

    The HW is a HP Pavilion ZE2000 with AMD Turion and OS 64 bit Ubuntu.

    I am running hardy (8.04) 64-bit and ran into trouble with flash in firefox after following the extremely helpful roadmap to correcting my sound woes. There is now a 64-bit native flash available and it is a lot better. Here is a link to someone who provides a script to clean out the old garbage and load the new version:

    I have tried just about every bit of advice and still have no luck.

    I am using Intrepid with Ubuntu Studio. I have a Terratec DMX6Fire PCI sound-card. This card worked fine on Hardy Heron.

    I hear the sound BEFORE logging in, so the sound-card IS working.

    In Appendix A of the how-to, I fail on the following:
    The application does not play audio and does list an entry in the Playback tab;
    - the application is using PulseAudio but there is a problem, such as: a bug in PulseAudio, a problem with your ALSA kernel module or libraries, or your PCM/Master volume is muted.
    I can assure you that nothing is muted.

    I notice that others have problems with the Terratec 6Fire however, the start-up sound can be heard prior to log-in.

    My gut feeling is that two processes have grabbed my sound card. ICE1712 and VIA 8237 seem to belong to different processes. Where there is a choice between them, I don't know which to choose.

    Should I blacklist something so as to only allow one process to get my sound-card?

    At the moment, as soon as I log in, I hear no sound when using Rhythmbox Music Player but if I switch the visualiser to a sine-wave type wave form, I can "see" the sound. So I know it's streaming OK.

    I have tried all sorts of suggested configurations using Pulse Audio Device Chooser, in System -> Preferences -> Sound. For instance, I have set all settings to Autodetect (but in each case, the "Test" is silent).

    Here's what happens in Preferences -> Sound -> Playback. In each case, there is complete silence. Sometimes and error message and sometimes just the test box. (where I have duplicates, I list them if they behave differently):

    [EDIT] Actually have set up Jack Control and a synth and I have some output! So the sound card does work..all very confusing. Still can't play a CD with Audacious and I can only get one synth to actually work with my MIDI keyboard and produce a (simple) sound. Rhythmbox remains silent. So far so unimpressed!

    I hear there's a new kernel on the way. Might be some cures in that as the audio side gets some attention![/EDIT]

    Hello, I'm having sound problems also. I have Intrepid with all updates and I followed this guide with no luck. I'm not even getting any of the system sounds so it may be a sound card issue. My sound was working fine all around on XP four days ago before I switch to ubuntu 8.10. Here's my aplay -l and part of the very long - pkill pulseaudio; sleep 2; pulseaudio -vv. Any help is appreciated.
