Honestly, nothing MS does anymore surprises me.

    Jabber FTW!

Or, simply use Off the record (OTR) like I do.
Rubbish. Linux users should feel free to use what ever software they like, and shouldn't be driven to use FOSS only software. Plus isn't telling people to avoid proprietary software going against the FOSS ethics of "freedom of choice?"

Don't get me wrong, FOSS is great, but you shouldn't be close minded and ignore a certain type of software because of linux/FOSS fanboyism.

    I never claimed FOSS.
I was simply saying we should boycott MSN Messengering for privacy, security and seek an alternative, instead of using a Microsoft product. Sure, MSN may have some benefits, but so does Windows, yet I use Linux.

Windows users don't use Linux formats or protocols (besides apache), so why should linux users use Windows protocols? Just a thought..

Because all of their Windows-using friends do use Windows protocols and could give a ****-less about open standards.

By the way, does anyone know of a good jabber server? Apparently the server I was on (cafelinux.org) is down, and there is no idea if it will ever return. I have heard that jabber.org has alot of downtime. Any other server recommendations?

    Gmail?

I didn't even know people still used MSN messanger. It makes sense, given how many people use Windows, but don't they get sick of porn bots?

jabber.org (which, as the post above mine notes, has occasional brownouts) or GoogleTalk. Not a lot of other options that I'm aware of.

Of course, if you have the resources, it's easy enough to set up your own.

Microsoft finally feels the backpain that Google has caused them.

Yes, use gmail. Gmail's jabber service is never down, because, well, Google is up at least 200% of the time
