Re: HOWTO: Install VMware Server in Hardy (and later)

Hey Brett, your script looks like it's working really well for others. I have not had success with it but would hope to soon. I tried running it and all I got was stuck on Updating Ubuntu, despite having just updated before starting the script. I have attached a screen of what's going on.

My system is an upgrade from Gutsy, and has never had vmware on this install.

    Any advice would be awesome.

I was looking for VMWare on Linux and found this topic.
Excellent, but is doesn't work for me.

I followed the steps mentioned in the first screen and run the script.

    The following error occurs.

Does it sound familiar to anyone?

    ronald@ronald-laptop:~$ chmod a+x ./install_vmware.sh && ./install_vmware.sh

    A reboot was the solution.

I removed the line that hides the output for upgrading Ubuntu. If you want to copy the script above it should work.

The problem is, sometimes 'sudo aptitude upgrade' will ask for input, especially for unsigned repositories.

It should work now, but not look as 'pretty' as it will spew out the output.

Yeah, those error messaging didn't look to good. Is it up and working now?

    Yes, vmware works fine.

The only thing I have to do is getting my images, created under windows, up and running.

I get a disk error, images runs from my /home dir.

Sorry, what do you mean images? Like .iso files? Or .jpg files?

Are you talking about mounting or transferring files between both operating systems?

No, I meant the vmware images I already have created in a windows environment.

But, I working on it and the things I have had done today are running.
So, I think by the end of this week the problems are solved.

altonbr, thank you so much! It worked perfectly. Turns out it wanted to remove an old kernel before continuing, and it was able to finish properly after that, and everthing works fine. Runs my VMs just right.

What a great day! Got MSOffice (grr) and VMWare to work on Ubuntu today! Thanks a lot.

This worked exactly as described and saved me a huge amount of work/time. Thanks for the script. I learned from following its logic and your instructions for use and will use this again.
