    Real new Aussie needs help

Hello i am brand new to Ubuntu and Linux. I have installed Gutys on my computer, I love it so far but i am having a few problems with two applications. I have searched the forums but can not find the answer that i need.

The first problem that i am having is a am trying to use k9copy which opens up and lets me open the dvd i want to burn but while it is opening it shuts it's self down and dissapears with out a trace grrr.

I also wanted to use dvdshrink with wine but after i installing it through wine and clicking on the dvdshrink. It comes up with dvdshrink starting down the bottom of my screen and then just dissapears as well. i have followed all of the guides on setting up and install wine and dvd shrink but with the same results everytime.

    Can anybody help me?

yeah, first of all why gutsy?

that is 18 months, and 3 version out of date. Personally i would try 8.04, hardy, and go from there

and any particular reason you want to use dvd shrink?

(oh and what version of wine are you running).

as for cd/dvd burning, go and grab imgburn, (google it), and use it in wine

i use gnomebaker for writing cd's/dvd's.

gutsy (7.10) is not 3 versions out of date, and as far as i know a lot of people here recommend waiting a month or so before upgrading to hardy, until the major bugs are fixed.

you may not have the most current updates for Gutsy, so here's what you do. open up your terminal (the command prompt) and type this

    sudo apt-get update

that oughta do the trick man

oh, and there are plenty of really good CD burning programs for Ubuntu, Gnomebaker is one of them, to install that again open up your terminal and type

    sudo apt-get install gnomebaker

    i personally like k3b though

    sudo apt-get install k3b

Doesn't feel out of date! Works fine and I installed Gutsy last month in April. I don't think it was out of date then.

Download GnomeBaker if you get a chance. I've had better luck with it than with K9Copy and K3b.

Also, are these data DVDs? Or are they Movies that you're trying to copy?

You'll need something like DVDFab HD Decrypter to first rip the movie and then use Shrink to get it to a size to fit the typical blank DVD. I use this method and it works great. They both work fine in Wine.

I've also been using HandBrake to rip movies to fit on a CD. Really works well.

Make sure your system is up to date. That should take care of any program problems you might be having with Wine, etc.

Good luck and long live Gutsy!
