I often wonder this, why is the icon for GIMP a cat/dog thing?

Instead of an um...image of a gimp? I'm kind of curious really.

The official mascot of GIMP, Wilber was created by Tuomas Kuosmanen (tigert) at some point before September 25, 1997; since then Wilber has received additional accessories from other GIMP developers.[37] Accessories for Wilber can be found in the Wilber construction kit, included with the GIMP source code.[37]
Wilber is also used as a free software cultural reference outside of GIMP, for example Wilber can be played as a racing car driver in SuperTuxKart along with other free software cultural icons.[38] In addition to being referenced in other software projects, Wilber has been shown on the side of the Bibliothèque nationale de France as part of Project Blinkenlights.[39]

I think it was something the devloper first drew using Gimp

Boredom and an absence of an abundance of ideas.

Wilbur is a dog; specifically, a Chinese Crested. The icon was from back when GIMP started, when Wilbur was still young.

Wilbur is now in a nursing home, but he still enjoys playing checkers, watching Jeopardy, and sniffing the nurses' crotches:

Favorite man page quote: "The backreference \n, where n is a single digit, matches the substring previously matched by the nth parenthesized subexpression of the regular expression." [excerpt from grep(1)]
