Ok, total noobie question.....I am sure that it has been answered before but since I do not see a thread regarding this matter....
Now that I have downloaded a .tgz or a tar.bz2 file. How do I install the program?
Thanks in advance.

if its in one of those it might have custom steps need to compile/install it. Are you sure your software doesnt have a .deb file somewhere? what software is it?
for compiling your own software you will need to install some stuff, and it can get a little hairy. the reason you sometimes have to compile is that the software wasnt precompiled into a deb file for you. The raw code means that it can work with any distribution (in theory) of linux. Sounds kinda lazy of the programmers huh? Well there are hundreds (if not thousands) of distributions out there.
anyhow knowing what the program is will help here.
although old maybe this can help : http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/
