Hardy 8.04 sluggish, not reading some directories

I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 and got the myriad of lockup problems... which seemed to be my ide hd weren't being read.

Have just done a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04, and am having several problems...

1: my ide hard drives are labeled sda, sdc, and sdd... huh?
2: reading directories or folders are slow... painfully. I can make a coffee while waiting for ls to run.
    3. while reading some directories, whether in a filemanager(dolphin etc) or via terminal I get an
    Code:
    Input/output error
I'm not sure where to start looking for problems as my hd seem to be okay (fdisk)

I'm just about ready to go back to 7.10, but many people who return are then complaining the problems don't seem to go away. Can 8.04 stuff up your hardware... that easily?

    1. I noticed this too. It's no big deal.
    2. Local folders or network folders?
    3. I found Kubuntu 7.10 very buggy. Maybe try Ubuntu 8.04 instead?

Using Ubuntu, rather than Kubuntu, the reading of directories in Gnome is still somewhat sluggish... though the terminal seems responsive enough...

You should not recieve such errors. Perhaps your hard disk is failing.

+1, that was going to be my next suggestion. Is it quite an old IDE drive?

I agree. You should make a backup A.S.A.P.

Cool Re: Hardy 8.04 sluggish, not reading some directories

I was more inclined to the hardy lockup problem... one is 40gb, and I bought it at around AUD$160 the 2nd 120gb same price and the last 240gb at $100... 5, 4, & 2 years...?

    I can't quite understand that.

It sounds like you may be using a 5 year old 40Gb IDE drive?

Replace it I would say, SATA hard drives are quite cheap nowadays and perform much better.
