    Re: OpenOffice3 Beta

If you don't want to mess up your stable OOo2.4 setup, following this guide gives you a fully functional OOo3beta to play with, without touching either your 2.4 or your config files. Just did it, and it's great

Ok, well I'm not a noob, no offense but I probably know more about linux than you do, so I know how to compile stuff. My question was where i would FIND the source files to compile it or 64-bit versions of the debs. Your information was not useful in any sense of the word. As to why I run 64-bit, look for any thread in these forums about the advantages and disadvantages, and then ask me.

    Re: OpenOffice3 Beta

    hello,

    i've done the steps above:
decompressed and installed all the debs with dpkg -i *.deb
it all went wel no errors and i also checked the md5sum
but when i try to run it i get this:
    ubuntu@ubuntu:/opt/openoffice.org3/program$ ./swriter
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/../basis-link/ure-link/bin/javaldx: error while loading shared libraries: libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    ubuntu@ubuntu:/opt/openoffice.org3/program$
is there someone who can help me? i don't have java installed maybe that has to do with it? and witch package do i have to download?
The weird thing is that libuno_sal.so.3 is in opt/openoffice.org/ure/lib. I installed also openoffice.org-java-common but it didn't help. My keyboard is azerty dont know if that has to do with it?

The source files are available at the same place: http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta/

There are multiple packages, and I'm not really sure whether dependencies etc are an issue.

If you successfully compile, I'd be glad to know which order you managed it.

Alright, I'll think I'll try that. I'm used to compiling code anyway, I run compiz, kiba-dock, and epiphany with webkit (testing purposes), which are all compiled and updated via either git or svn. I will report back if/when I succeed.

    Re: OpenOffice3 Beta

Well this sure is challenging. I got the configuring done, after resolving all the strange dependencies. Now I'm stuck, I have no idea how to compile this sucker. The folder structure is really confusing. Does anyone know how to compile it after you have configured it correctly?
P.S. This is one of the most annoying things I've compiled on linux, up there with firefox and gecko, or compiling a custom kernel.
EDIT: I started a thread to hopefully address this problem here.

Because 64-bit is the future, and many of us have 4GB or more of memory.

Why don't you try and uninstall OO2? If it breaks OO3, you could just reinstall OO2 with a few clicks/commands.
