Trying unsuccessfully to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04

I'm using Xubuntu 7.10 and trying to upgrade to 8.04. I get to a stage in the upgrade process at which there appears a message "Can't guess meta-packag[e]". I'm told to install (relevantly) xubuntu-desktop first before proceeding.

I ran "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" and was told that that would install 181MB/182MB of archives, which would occupy 638MB of space.

Am I understanding this correctly? Do I really need to install so much additional material before I can upgrade? If so, is there a way I can do it using my Xubuntu 7.10 alternative install CD rather than using the Internet?

If I don't need to install that material, what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for reading this.

I'd recommend a clean install, but you should probably just try installing the package, or download + burn + run an 8.04 alternate install cd.
