ssh from ubuntu 7.1 not working

I am trying to ssh from my ubuntu 7.1 installation to a fedora 5 installation.

    I type in

    ssh <username>@192.168.1.20

    and wait forever

about 10 minutes later the command prompt comes back and says

ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.20 port 22: Connection timed out

The firewall on the remote host is definitely allowing ssh connections to come through because I am able to connect from a fedora 6 machine to the same host.

The ubuntu machine I am doing this from is allowing incoming ssh connections from the remote machine.

Is your Ubuntu computer on the same network as the other Fedora computers?

Have you changed any iptables settings in ubuntu?

Re: ssh from ubuntu 7.1 not working

Sounds like it could be a basic connectivity issue.

Can you ping the fedora 5 machine from the Ubuntu one? If the Ubuntu machine is using a static ip, check and make sure it has the proper subnet mask.

If you run tcpdump on the Fedora 5 machine, does it even show connection attempts from the Ubuntu machine?

As root on the Fedora box:
    Code:
tcpdump port 22 and host <ubuntu ip address> and host <fedora ip address>

Re: ssh from ubuntu 7.1 not working

    try :

    ssh -vv ssh <username>@192.168.1.20

the additional output is often helpful in de bugging.

Both machines are on the same lan.
in a 192.168.1.1 network with subnet mask 255.255.255.0

I ran the tcpdump command on my fedora machine.

    here are the results.

Hrmm. Okay. There is traffic from Ubuntu to Fedora in the tcpdump you have shown, but I do not see traffic from Fedora to Ubuntu. Ubuntu is not getting any replies back from Fedora. Doing any outbound firewalling on the Fedora side? Also check /var/log/messages and /var/log/auth.log on the Fedora side.

This is different from what you showed earlier in tcpdump. There is back and forth traffic between both boxes, and the Fedora side is replying.

I would run the same tcpdump command on the Ubuntu box and try the connection again. If you are still getting timeouts in Ubuntu, I am inclined to think its a firewall issue on the Ubuntu side.

Did you find anything in the Fedora logs?

/var/log/messages is a very long file that does not seem to have any obvious information about this particular issue.

    /var/log/auth.log does not exist.

I am checking for both on the fedora machine.

    thanks
