I installed 8.04 fresh on a new HDD, and am having a lot of trouble with sound.

most of my media apps start up with some message about being unable to initiate / find a sound server, or ALSA, and then fail to play anything.

I have read a lot of threads here and tried a few of them, with no real success.

I never had these problems in 7.10

what gives?
