I like mplayer. I don't particularly like Totem. However, mplayer stutters when playing certain avi files. It plays fine for periods of time ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes, and then both the video and the audio pause for about a second; the video continues, and the audio makes an abnormally loud noise, as though the sound it missed playing is trying to catch up. This is coupled with synchronization problems. I've tried -autosync 30 all the way up to -autosync 200, but it doesn't solve the problem. I don't know what values of -autosync should be, so I stopped there. Totem plays these (well, I only tested with one; I'll look at others later) without any problem.
