If, for some reason, you want to go back to ALSA, here is the procedure: (I tested this myself on my test system)
    Code:
    sudo soundoff
    sudo dpkg -r oss-linux
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
    sudo apt-get -y install libesd-alsa0 alsa-oss alsa-base libsdl1.2debian-alsa
    gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
The preceding command opens your blacklist file in the text editor. Delete all the lines from "blacklist snd-seq" down to the end of the file (make sure the last line in the file refers to a snd module and was not added by another program).
    Restart the PC.
Now, re-install ALSA kernel modules with this script: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=820959
Go to System -> Preferences -> Sounds and select Autodetect or ALSA
Any applications that you configured for OSS should be changed back to ALSA, although they should work with the alsa-oss wrapper.

Optionally, you can setup and configure PulseAudio. I have no experience with this, but I have seen guides for it (use search). If you do, remember to install the Pulse-compatible libflashsupport package:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libflashsupport
I did some extra commands to get rid of OSS4 (Source)
    Code:
    sudo sh /usr/lib/oss/scripts/restore_drv.sh
and add the OSS modules to the blacklist
    Code:
    sudo cat /lib/linux-sound-base/noOSS.modprobe.conf >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
If really everything is misconfigured and nothing works try the hard way:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-$(uname -r)

Question Re: Hardy 8.04 & OSS4 (Alternative to ALSA)

    Hello again,

I made it through all of the instructions... but...

sudo soundon causes a system crash.

    Code:
    ossinfo

No /dev/mixer device available in your system.
Perhaps Open Sound System is not installed or running.
So, clearly OSS is not running.

    Code:
    sudo ossdetect -v

Detected Creative SB X-Fi (PCI-e) *EARLY BETA*
USB support available in the system, adding USB driver
Detected Generic USB audio/MIDI device (BETA)

Re: Hardy 8.04 & OSS4 (Alternative to ALSA)

    Hi,
I installed oss4.1 following the instructions and sound works awesome in my system. I have a lenovo y530 and all the speakers are now roaring with full volume

However, I haven't got my microphone to work. I basically want to be able to use skype. I tried ossrecord, audacity no sound is being recorded

Here are the various info that may help to figure out what might be wrong with my setup

    Arun,
I think you'll get more help on this subject at the OSS4 forum
Make sure you did this step right:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Op...on%20KDE%204.x

Thanks! I will give it a shot.
I am sure I did the step right. I am now on windows (due to a different problem with my internet in Linux)
Will come back to you soon.
    Cheers,
    Arun

I must agree that I didn't do that step carefully.
For my audio output, I could succesfully choose oss as the preferred over alsa
However in audio input, I don't see any devices. This is a cause for concern isn't it?

    Thanks,
    Arun

Re: Hardy 8.04 & OSS4 (Alternative to ALSA)

    Hello Temüjin,

You'll not remember me, but I've been attempting to install oss nearly 1 year ago (you've been very helpful in my thread on how to get rid of the failed installation back then).

Now, after my Alsa system has blown in my face some 4 weeks ago, I've finally decided to give it another shot, since I couldn't get Alsa back to work. After getting the latest hg repository release and following the steps exactly on the help.ubuntu.com page, as you suggested, OSS is up and running!

Mplayer is working fine, both in Firefox and as a standalone (just had to switch settings to oss), also Flashplayer 10 is working neatly, after applying the libflashsupport patch.

The only thing that wont budge, is to have my Maudio card (standard now) working along with my ADI onboard chip (Intel for real? Deactivated in BIOS now), as it wouldn't with Alsa. I'd like to have the opportunity to select the desired sound output per application, e.g. headset via onboard for ekiga or the likes, while playing music with my superior sound card...
    perhaps you've got an idea?

Thanks for your competent hints so far!

    perixx,
Are you using Xubuntu 8.04 as your signature indicates? If so, make sure you have the right oss plugins to make ekiga work:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libpt-1.10.10-plugins-oss libsdl1.2debian-oss
    sudo apt-get remove libpt-1.10.10-plugins-alsa libsdl1.2debian-alsa
Enable your onboard audio and then post the output of ossinfo.
