    Wireless will access local network but not internet.

    I hope someone can help me with this. I am new to Ubuntu and Linux and I'm trying to learn.
    I have a Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop which is a dual boot between Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04. The wireless card is a Dlink that uses the Atheros chipset. The info on the chipset (obtained via lspci -v) is as follows:

    Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212/AR5213 Multiprotocol MAC/baseband processor (rev 01)

    I installed Ubuntu via Wubi if that makes any difference.
    My system consists of a cable modem hooked to a Linksys WRT54G router running WEP encryption (yes I know not that secure). The IP addresses are obtained via DHCP.
    For the first few days this system connected to internet fine in Ubuntu. This morning when I turned the machine on, I fired up the browser and nothing would connect. I also tried Pidgin and that would not connect either. Both were working fine last night. I then tried accessing some files on other machines in my local network and that DID work. I also rebooted into Windows and verified that the internet connection was working. It was.
    I then went back into Ubuntu and tried pinging several sites from the terminal (Yahoo, Google, and a domain that I own) and they did ping fine.
    I searched the forum but was unable to find anything that applied directly to my situation and the few things I saw that were similar did not help. Here is some more info that I obtained that I thought might be needed to diagnose my problem:

    I should also mention that I am running NO firewall on the linux install at this time.
    I apologize if I've "over-info'ed" or "under-info'ed" this post but I really am quite new to this. I am hopeful that someone can lead me in the right direction because I really don't know what I could have done to break this. It was working fine last night and the only thing I have been messing with is the fonts on the system.

    No one has any ideas? I have torn my hair out on this. I really like Ubuntu but it's unfortunately useless to me if the wireless doesn't connect to the internet.

    Can you ping any external hosts while using the wireless? Try to ping 4.2.2.2 and ping.symantec.com

    What are the results when you try those pings?

    What is the output of netstat -rn ?

    Also, when you say the browser would not connect, what type of error message did you receive? Do you have any proxy settings configured in the browser? Did you try a different web browser?

    This is my 100th post!

    this sounds like it's most likely a dns problem. as though your not accessing the wonders of dynamic name services try accessing the internet through a direct ip ping.

    system>administration>network tools
    go to the ping tab and type in 216.239.51.99

    also take a look at the following file for more information
    you'll need to open a terminal for this

    username@localhost~$sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces
    it should read

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    in order to have your ethernet device set to auto dhcp

    also check out
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf
    this is your network resolution configuration file if your previous file is set to auto this should automatically authenticate your dns servers it should give you two name servers in this file. if it does not then you can manually add your dns servers from your isp. at the end of the file just add the following lines

    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    this should get you up and running.

    The browser Firefox is configured to connect directly with no proxy and the message it gives is "Network Timeout. The server at cm.my.yahoo.com is taking too long to respond". I did try other sites with the same result.
    I dont have another browser installed but the fact that the Pidgin IM client won't connect leads me to believe that is something more than browser.

    So to me at least it looks like the nameservers are there. I suspected a DNS problem initially as well.
    An ipconfig /all from a Windows machine on the same network gives the same nameserver info. See below:

    Definitely seems like a dns issue.

    Please try this:

    Code:
    nslookup www.microsoft.com
    nslookup www.microsoft.com 4.2.2.2

    If the problem is with your default dns entries the first nslookup should fail, and the second one should succeed.

    Not sure why they would work under Windows but not linux. Perhaps one of the servers is failing/timing out, and linux is not trying the other.

    You could try them individually:

    Just for curiousity sake I also tried typing an IP address (207.46.19.254) from above directly into the URL bar of the browser. That did not work either.
