From gutsy to hardy, there seems to be a problem...

I have two laptops here, i upgraded one just fine, but it was a fresh install of gutsy from my cd. Noticed there was an update to hardy, so it just went fine. Hooked up the connection to the other laptop tried to upgrade, started doing well, so i went to sleep cause i was tired and it had a nice long wait to go. I wake up, the fresh installed gutsy successfully converts, but my much used gutsy didn't convert right. I just can't seem to log in. In fact, i couldn't even turn it back on without first unplugging it. Anyone have any idea what happened and what i can do about it without loosing my files?

Firstly, use the LiveCD to backup your essential files.

Next, when you say you cannot login, can you get a virtual-terminal (CTRL-ALT-F2 to F6) and login in at a command prompt?
