    Xorg randomy dies

    after a random (or what seems like random) amount of time after logging in Xorg decides to die and then start back up at the login prompt.

    The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1501 w/ Ubuntu 8.04 installed

    Need more information to work on. Fresh install or an upgrade from earlier version?

    Could you post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old?

    Re: Xorg randomy dies

    I have the same problem. I have a fresh in stall of Hardy on an HP laptop with an ATI video card. I'm using the proprietary driver (a whole other story) and I believe that is causing the problem. I beileve it is making a call to a deprecated method. Anyone know of any fixes?

    I also have been having problems with Xorg crashing under Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and previous revisions of Ubuntu.

    Historically and up to and including my current case of Xorg crashes are statistically associated with the disconnection of a USB sound card while the system is running. The normal case is one of my USB sound cards becomes disconnected for whatever reason (my SB Live! external USB seems to be rather touchy about being moved around) and some time (measured in hours) later the Xorg server will crash. This problem has plagued me through multiple revisions of Ubuntu, however I have also gone over 100 days at a time between reboots and restarts of the Xorg server as long as no sound cards become disconnected. (There is also a highly intermittent doom packet case that has already cost me a D-Link DGS-1008D gigabit switch that I am far from solving, but I am crossing my fingers on my most recent hardware and firmware changes / upgrades.)

    About six months ago at work when they gave me a new workstation I specifically asked for an nVidia based card because nVidia cards generally work best with Linux these days. However they instead gave me an ATI based card. After burning a significant amount of time trying to get the ATI card to work right, there were just too many show stopping problems with the drivers (including Xorg server crashes among other things), so they ended up returning the card and picking up an nVidia based card in its place.
