Starting with a 8.04 Server and adding what you need???????

Well, I do like kubuntu...and it seems as if my computer MIGHT be able to work if I start with a server and add what I need to it...BUT, what do I need? Obviously, I need to install the desktop environment (KDE or such) and I need to configure the X11/xorg.conf file but...is that all?
