Ubuntu still not ready for mainstreaming

    installed on Dell D610 notebook.

    - fonts are horrible. my eyes hurt looking at the blur.
    - wpa wireless didn't work out of the box. had to spend 90 mins messing with settings in Hardy and my router for a solution.
    - sound doesn't work in evolution or thunderbird
    - anyone serious about computer prioritizes scheduled backup more than anything else. where is it out of the box. is this just a kid's OS that focuses on eye candy rather than serious productivity usage?

why doesn't ubuntu just make their own notebook or commission Dell to make it, with 100% compatibility. sales would be ballistic.

Ubuntu, make your own laptop and I'll be back.
otherwise, I ain't intending to install on a non purpose built puter for at least 2 years.

So you assume that because it doesn't work for you it doesn't work for anyone? If that's your attitude, then leave. We don't need your type here.

uhhh- dude you should have gotten a dell with ubuntu preinstalled (yes, you are ignorant of the fact that they already do make them and sell them on the dell website).

At any rate- if "mainstream" os's had a better file system like linux has, backups would be far less important. And yes, you are once again ignorant of the fact that ubuntu already has apps that do this. Free.

while it is true that some users feel the same way as you do about Ubuntu others most assuredly do not. as far as functionality is concerned I personally don't have the faintest Idea what you are talking about I find Ubuntu rich in functionality. 90 min is not a long time BTW. as for sound some have trouble and some don't. I am not sure about this but wouldn't the making and selling of the OS defeat the purpose of free and freedom based software? You might get with some of the older users to solve some of your issues but it sounds like your laptop has issues 8.04 works fine on mine and I use it for work all the time.
perhaps this is to long a rant but I have one more comment and that is; I noticed this post was started is the beginners forum this kind of negative post has a tendency to discourage them and that is something I personally would not like to do.

Ubuntu Linux is not hard but, there is, as with all things, a learning curve.

Linux humor (apt-get moo) then (apt-get)

We get one of these guys every release. It's really quite boring to read these threads, but fun to post in (strangely).

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1720 January 2008) has been running Ubuntu 8.04 since Alpha 4 (or maybe a few days earlier with Alpha 3).

The laptop originally came with Vista and I got rid of that within 3 days -- now it is in a Virtualbox within Ubuntu.
The only thing that doesn't work is the Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth module.

well, sorry to hear your having such problems. Honestly for most installations all of the problems you mention do work out of the box, though, wireless can be an issue depending on your card.

HOWEVER, what ubuntu does have is a rich community filled with people anxious to help out. Maybe try not to be so negative, ask for help with your problems, and you'll wind up a convert.

You get what you pay for. Oh wait you didn't have to pay for it now did you. Some people have a lot of nerve. You get the OS for free, and then bitch because you have to actually do a little bit of work to get it configured correctly. Next time try a bit of humility and thankfulness. It will get you far more help.
