How to install ndiswrapper and wireless driver for newbies

thanks a bunch, but mine is still not working, i have the RealTek 8185... I followed your tut and here is what i get...

rick@rick-laptop:~$ ndiswrapper -l
net8185 : driver installed
devidce (10EC:8185) present

so that one has no alteratives

and then the other one does this...

And its not working, wifi radar program doesn't pick up anything, I can't ping anything, and the network manager doesn't even show a wireless ability yet... Please Help...

Ok guys I have a serious problem, I was following the tutorial, I did a complete reinstall and this tutorial was the first thing I did, I am running this on a Gateway MX 3417 I have the AMD64 Hardy version for the desktop...

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper doesn't do anything it just goes to the next line and sits, it doesn't even ask me for a command prompt, it just sits there... so I opened up a new terminal, left that one alone, and went on with the tutorial... When it was time to restart I did, and while booting, it gets stuck at * Loading manual drivers... and now I do not know what to do, I can't even get into the system, I will have to do another fresh install just to get back in... whats going on?

i'm not sure about why It's getting "stuck"? Have you let it sit for a while? and also - sudo modprobe ndiswrapper will not give you an output if successful. And: did you run sudo ndiswrapper -m, and add "ndiswrapper" to /etc/modules?

No I haven't let it sit...

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper just goes to the next line, it doesn't even prompt me for a command, its as if I just pushed the return button and it is just sitting there... Is it supposed to take a while, and I supposed to wait on that one, at least until it gives me a command prompt...

I ran sudo ndiswrapper -m and it went fine...

also, when i open up another terminal and do dmesg, it gives me this long drawn out answer, and then at the end it says i shouldn't use it becuase it is deprecated... lol, I'm currently reinstalling ubuntu, and now I am going to try the tutorial all over again... Thanks for the quick reply...

Are you absolutely positive you need to install Ndiswarapper from source? It's much easier (and preferable) to add it via:
system > administration > synaptic

Just search for "ndiswrapper" and add it.

The method outlined in this thread is outdated, you should not use it.

windows (and therefore ndiswrapper) makes use of BOTH the .inf and the .sys files to make a driver function. the .inf file tells the system how and when to use .sys file (like a script).

the ONLY file(s) that ever needs to be loaded into the ndiswrapper wrapper is the .inf file(s), but the .sys file needs to be located on the system in the same directory as the .inf file so that ndiswrapper can call on it as needed.
