Hardy - prior partitions not seen during install

Trying to do a clean install after a failed upgrade (used the Upgrade Manager Upgrade link - borked big time). Now, when trying to do a clean install on my dual boot hard drive, the partition manager finds the hard drive, but does not see any existing partitions. Same response using GPARTED from the 8.04 Live CD when accessed from the drop down menu. Both the Windows XP partitions, and the old 7.1 Ubuntu partitions still exist - will boot into via grub. When I get to the menu that lists Guided, Manual, etc for partitioning schemes, the only drive info that appears is the actual hard drive. Selecting it wants to delete all existing partitions - do not want to go that route. Ideas, help??

Problem solved - wiped out old partitions and did clean install. Upgrade from 7.1 obviously was not happy.
