    Got it! Create a launcher and give the command "nm-applet". Problem solved. Thanks though!!

    Network manager is not a panel applet, to put it back just press alt-f2 and enter nm-applet then press enter.

    Make sure the entry in system>prefs>sessions is still checked so that it starts whenever you logout/in.
