    "Frequency Out of Range" Error - ATI X800 - Restricted Driver Manager/Ubuntu 8.04

    I was hoping that with this release, the first having a graduated driver from ATI that has a lot more bells and whistles than the default Gutsy driver did, I was hoping that I wouldn't have any problems with my old ATI X800. But...I was wrong. I install the driver using the restricted driver manager, and then on reboot, I get this weird "Out of Range" error coming up on the monitor, leaving me unable to see much of anything, and I then have to reboot and I've just left my Ubuntu partition alone at this point. I try booting into recovery mode in Ubuntu, using the "Fix X server", but then I get a white screen after login screen. Then all I have left to do is a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and that has no 3D or any sort of acceleration at all. Any ideas at what I should do? Is there a way I can add resolutions to my xorg.conf before I reboot after I've installed my ATI drivers using restricted driver manager? Just, I'd like to know what I can do to get ubuntu up and running, cause I just want to completely switch over.

    Is your card PCIe or AGP?

    First, you should try generating a modeline for your monitor with the cvt tool. For example, if you wanted 1680x1050 at 60Hz:

    Paste the output into the Monitor section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and delete all other mode lines. (gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf) You'll also need to change the underscore to a '@'

    If that doesn't work, I'll have you retrieve your X.org log with this procedure: boot with the restricted driver. When it finishes loading and you can't see the screen, press Ctrl+Alt+F1, login as your normal user, and run this:

    cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Desktop
    Now do the sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and restart. The X.org log should be on your desktop. Copy and paste that log here with [ code ][ /code ] tags. Do the same with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

    Eh...where do I exactly paste it? All I have is a bunch of "configured monitor/screen" etc...mess. And the card is a PCI-Express.

    Edit 2:

    well, I added that modeline, but then I got a weird as mess error, the screen went green and black and then red and black, and came up with an error that it said it had to run in low-graphics mode, but then I configured it, and logged back in to a working desktop, and got a new xorg.conf

    I am haveing the same problems. I have tried eveything including Envy to no avail. I don't want to jump in the middle of what you al are working on so if littlemanx23 can get his running then maybe we can take a swat at mine. (Radeon 9700 Pro)
