Well, I have had partial success with -rt kernel. It didn't lock up. But on a regular basis wireless was loosing the connection and couldn't connect anymore, so I had to reboot anyway. I just could do it in a clean way.
Now comes the interesting part. My lock ups seem to be definitely related to wireless. What's more interesting, it seems to be related to key ring interval & WPA encoding. Today I'm in a different network, connected to Asus wireless router. So far so good. Wireless in -rt didn't stop working.
I'll see, if wireless problems come back![]()
I agree 100% .... hardy sucks sucks and again sucks.
Jes....this is the worts release ever And I can tell cause I've been using ubuntu since it was born in 2004.
I have a laptop that doesn't suspend and hibernate (it used to. "implemented" in hoary 5.04) , I have no virtual consoles, and mostly this s**t hangs for no reason and the kernel panics just because you leave it there for an hour.
Is thereany MS guy working in ubuntu right now? Jesus, I've tried a few distro (my main distro is gentoo ) and I've never seen something so bad...

My computer locks-up when no one is around. It is a desktop that I do not put into standby, but I do have it turn off the monitor. The computer is just sitting there and it may sit for 4 hrs to 4 days before it locks up. Nothing going on, I may have Thunderbird and Firefox still running but that is it. It is not just a video problem because the computer disappears from the network too.
When it locks up I need to do a hard reset of the machine. I know it is not hardware because 7.10 ran fine on it and my other dual-boot is Windows and it runs fine. (Windows runs fine, Linux lock up; that sounds strange).
Absolutely nothing in the log files to help me diagnose the problem.
Any ideas on how to fix the problem?
guys, I updated my system and believe it or not ..
it didn't freeze since then !!
even though i'm using the Generic kernel !!
I have a slightly different lockup scenario. It only happens when I install either the ati drivers from the ubuntu repo or the proprietary drivers from ati. From what I gather though it is an Xserver issue. I ran the live cd and hardy worked fine. I installed on one of my hd's. It only locks up when starting the Xserver. If I dont install the drivers it doesnt so Yeah it really is random issues.
Which generic kernel? And where did you get it? I noticed that 2.6.25.1-generic is no longer available at ppp.launchpad.net anymore.
My system (Ubuntu) had been rock soild for 3 + years. After upgrading to Hardy Im also getting lockups. After dealing with this for the several weeks, Im going to give Fedora a try.
Hi Guys,
Newb here and always will be..have to agree Ubuntu has sent me to the arms of openSUSE (I'm blind eyeing the whole MS thing). I have tried for a week to get help with the familiar NVIDIA config issues...I am so over it. I've tried latest NVIDIA drivers, inc beta, compiled for the latest kernel, i've messed with the xorg (Phew) and I am sat here on dual monitors 800x600. It is killing me. I'll come back maybe on 8.10 but Suse 11 looks appealing.
Saying that Hardy is working great on a box with an fx5700-deluxe in it and looks great and no lockups.
anyone wanna help I have a death of NVIDIA thread stating my probs.
