I've upgraded 2 machines, a Lenovo Laptop and a "homebrew desktop from 7.10 to 8.04 - and did it the risky way, with the "Update Manager".
I was too lazy to burn a CD !!!
Both have been running for a couple of weeks with no problem (knock on wood).
Actually, the upgrade "fixed" a video glitch I had on boot-up ...

Sometimes you are the bug and sometimes the windshield !!!

I agree. 30% of the time when I startup and double click on a video to launch it with VLC, the whole system locks up completely. I am seriously considering downgrading to gutsy.

Installed Hardy on an Acer 4652 LMi with 1GB RAM and Intel 940 Graphics. Works quite well except for ugly Chinese characters which is due to a font substitution problem.

OT?: How do you resolve the Chinese font issue?

I have switched to the real time kernel of Hardy, as I was having random total crashes. Even at startup and shutdown. Since then no crashes at all ...touch wood, just sometimes seems a bit tardy. I will be happy to hear that this problem is acknowledged (yeah, if you haven´t experienced it, that doesn´t mean the problem´s not there!) and resolved. I like Hardy and would like to move it onto all my machines.

Re: Hardy is BY FAR the worst Ubuntu version yet. LOCKUP WARNING!!!

Newbie here, have been with Ubuntu for just two months. Started out with Gutsy and later a clean installed Hardy. I haven't had any lock ups yet. My laptop is a Compaq Presario, Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz, I.5 GiB RAM and an 80 GiB Hard drive. I am really confused as to why some people should have lock ups and have to move to other Linux distros or Windows and some like me have no problems? What does one make out of all these posts? Could we have some developer input here?

Well, Mr. Newbie, I'd say you've hit the nail right on the head! What makes this such a distressing issue is that there is a lot of bad behavior going on for some users, but it isn't particularly consistent, though the end result is always having to reboot your system. Users who you might think would share the problem don't necessarily, and users who don't seem to have anything in common are experiencing these similar issues.

I think that may indicate that there is more than one problem at work here. It's generally when you have a couple of issues that affect each other that you see this 'random' bad behavior. Basically, you have to assume that the behavioral pattern is so complex that nobody has noticed it yet. Some people thought they did but eventually their theories get blown out of the water by somebody else's experience. Which again indicates to me there are at least two different issues. Possibly a failing of a certain subsystem that manifests differently in different programs/libraries/modules that rely on it.

What does one make out of all these posts? Could we have some developer input here?
If you're looking to know what the developers think, I suggest the mailing lists, launchpad.net and the irc channels. I'm not sure the developers you're looking for are monitoring this thread. We're of course interested in hearing about any correspondence you have.

And so it is, packages are older (OpenOffice 2.0 instead of 2.4) and no 'bling' with the nv driver for the Geoforce 6150 integrated graphics .

Well it seems people have noticed it. Even I am having the same issue. Run a video and the system freezes. Audio runs, i Can move my mouse and thats it. I cant ever end the session via the 'kill xserver' key combo. IT seems to be a animation plugin bug by the look of it:

In Windows, Its easier said than done but in Linux, Its already done...
