As a new user of Ubuntu, and someone who has limited knowledge of Linux in general (but I am fairly technical and will learn soon), Ubuntu 8 was excellent for me and an upgrade over the previous version. I didn't have to compile this or that, or go into a terminal and wget the nvidia drivers because the screen is all screwed up. Nor did I have to fool around with getting my Broadcom wireless drivers working.
All I had to do was use the install cd, connect an ethernet cable to download the non-free drivers and then I could be untethered.
Ubuntu is years ahead of Vista, and I, a long time Windows user have made the change. All I miss is a few games. I also am missing the massive harddrive corruptio n that screwed over my Vista installation, and Vista's lack of ability to install without messing with the BIOS. This is the first time I can say Linux installed more flawlessly than Windows. Progress has been made. It's far better than when I tried using Fedora.
For me, Ubuntu 8 is the best Linux has to offer. But then again, I've only used Fedora and Ubuntu.
As a side note, I really loved the live cd install as you play around idea. It's great being able to browse the web with Firefox while the OS is installing.
