Oh stop it... just let people complain if they want to. It's gonna happen whether you throw your own little hissy fit or not. Let them get it out of their systems. Many of these folks have been with Ubuntu for a while now and have devoted much of their time, effort, and computer resources to trying to make this latest version work. That's not FREE. And Canonical is a for-profit company. Allowing the community at large to iron out the bugs is simply part of the process. They have a right to b*tch. Just let them.

Re: Who else thinks 8.04 is a MAJOR dissapointment?

I've used the last 3 or 4 versions of Ubuntu, and i'd have to agree that this release is the worse by far. Tons of problems, including WiFi is broken on my laptop, among other annoying little problems such as the gdm-setup utility doesn't load up. (System > Admin > Logon screen). Once it's clicked on, nothing comes up and my hard drive LED pulsates rapidly. I thought it just wasn't working, but then about 45 minutes later, to my surprise, it popped up...

The experience on my desktop computer was fairly better but not anywhere near as good as previous versions.

And to think, Long term release.

    yes, yes and yes.

The one gripe I have is that I spent an afternoon getting the system the way I like it. Not a complaint really: I am nerdy enough to love tinkering.

BUt if I want to complain, I should. This distro is suposed to be a viable alternative to MS. If complaints, gripes and queries hasten the growth and improvement of Ubuntu, then good. Open source projects feed on feedback. Lets give it: calm and measured or frustrated and angry, the devs need to know. Let it all out!

Well, I wont say that 8.04 is a major dissapointment, but a little maybe. I really don't see any progress from 7.10 other than some new programs will be installed standard, which i don't like.

I think 8.04 is a half step back.

There's so many screen resolution problem right now, especially with nVidia driver enabled.

I actually predicted how 8.04 would be, I used the beta for some time, and I though if they only had 30 days left to release, they're either really busy or they just don't plan to do much. And I think that's what it ended up being.

I agree to everything on this matter. Yes, Ubuntu is free, but getting frustrated is completely okay. I frustrated often over Ubuntu. And if Ubuntu is to compete with Windows, every opinion matters to make Ubuntu better.

The truth about 9/11 is being hidden from us.

    Code:
    sudo fix problem

There's not much Ubuntu can do about the nVidia driver being buggy except maybe stop shipping it entirely. It is a binary only non-free blob.

Re: Who else thinks 8.04 is a MAJOR dissapointment?

This version was quite a letdown. Everything looks pretty good, except for what is a -major- issue for me. 90% of my work is done on a remote X-session (X server on my Mac Mini, apps running on my laptop under Ubuntu). All versions up to now were fine, but with 8.04 it is unusably slow.
Most apps are OK, (albeit a bit sluggish), but Evolution is so slow as to be unusable (20 seconds for a screen redraw??).
All is perfect when using the machine locally.
I haven't dug around (still fuming about having to reinstall 7.10) but it looks like some underlying font-rendering issues or something.. Oh, almost forgot about the fact that gnome-settings-daemon won't run out the box under a remote X session either!!

    Grrrrrrrr.

I remember when the first version came out, i ordered a cd from ubuntu foundation i think it was and they sent me 5 copies. I gave 4 away and used one. Hardy compared the the first is like comparing a Yugo to a Cadillac. I found most all the drivers i needed were installed or at my fingertips to be installed as needed ( flashplayer, java, win32codecs, etc). Hardy is the easiest one yet to install of all distros except pclinux2007. It runs very smooth and no jerkiness at all.

Just tried that for myself out of curiosity and the same thing happens! Hard drive activity goes mental. It's still going mental in fact, the window hasn't popped up yet. What is up with that?!
