Failed to fetch!!!!????

I just installed 8.04 from 7.10 this morning and my synaptic and update-manager hang while updating or by hitting the reload button in synaptic. When I cancel the update or reloading process it seems that there are 9 files that can't be fetched:

Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_US.bz2
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...es/Release.gpg
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_US.bz2
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_US.bz2
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_US.bz2

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

How do I get around this? I'm not sure if I need these or not.

the server is busy. Ubuntu servers are being swamped right now

It could be that the Server's were getting hammered really bad at the time.

As I'm sure you can appreciate, everybody wants to download the CD Image, and so the server's get pretty busy. Try again at some point, it should be fine

But also, don't forget to check your internet connection etc.

I'm getting this too. It has nothing to do with your connection, the servers are just "swamped".

It will die down soon.

I too am getting it. I thought it was my machine and then thought "Oh wait it might be the servers". Just wanted to check on the forums and double check. Thought it might have been a new issue since I was using beta and never had this prob. Thanks for the info.

If you are not doing the upgrade through the package manager tried downloading from the torrents. There are tons of seeds out there and its making the download go a lot quicker. The servers today have been very unresponsive due to the fact everyone wants to get their hands on the new bird .

Looks like ubuntu needs faster servers and more bandwidth

While it is annoying, getting servers hammered due to popularity and increased interest is a great problem to have!

edit: This issue is happening to me as well FAMUgolfer. I'd give it a day or so and it should calm back down.

Any chance they are working on using a BitTorrent method of distribution for patch upgrades? Now that is what I would love to see!
