I try to do this from "shared folders" under administration, yet when I try to even choose a folder to share, it gives me "Bookmark saving failed (permission denied)"
When I try it via right-click in Nautilus, nothing happens. I'm confused

I presume you got past the point where you had to choose (or install) Samba or NFS?
