package install problem

Hi I'm a newbie to ubuntu 7.10. While installing any package in the terminal the installation ends with this error.

errors were encountered while processing : jde
E; Subprocess /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Everything else seems to go as it should. tried to Google but nothing could I find.

If anyone can Help I would be greatful

Does this error appear for packages installed via synaptic?
Are these packages downloading from online?
What are you trying to install?
Where did you get the package you are trying to install?

I was installing using the terminal. I was installing vlc. This happens om any installation using the terminal

well that is strange is synaptic open when you try the installs via the terminal?
