    Problem with resolutions

    Dear Ubuntu-users:

I recently installed Ubuntu (yesterday), and have now run into a bit of a sticky wicket. The system is usable, but the monitor resolutions are off. You see, I have a dual-monitor system and have set both to 1280x1024 resolution. One is connected to my nVidia graphics card via VGA and the other via DVI. Bringing up the monitor menu usefully informs me that the optimal settings are 1280x1024@60 (which is what they're both at). The problem is, is that the left monitor's (VGA) screen area is larger than the monitor, and it therefore scrolls around the desktop if you mouse to any of the edges. The right monitor (DVI) appears to be working properly, as there is no scrolling (though it doesn't quite seem 1280x1024). Does anyone have any suggestions? The content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf is reproduced below.

    Regards,

    Alex.

    Re: Problem with resolutions

HI and welcome, have you tried to adjust the resolution with nvidia-settings
    use the command
    Code:
    gksudo nvidia-settings
either in the terminal or using the alt,F2 keys.

    Re: Problem with resolutions

I had not. However, attempting adjustment therein prompted:

"The XRandR X extension was not found. This extension must be supported by the X server and enabled for display configuration settings to be dynamically applicable."

Ah, I wrote out a new X.org configuration file over the old one and it's working now. Thanks for the pointer. ^^/

Haha, I was looking for that option yesterday, but couldn't find it under thread tools. I only have:

    Show printable version
    Email this thread
    Subscribe to this thread
Add a poll to this thread

None of which seems appropriate. What am I doing wrong?
