Re: Can't StartX-Could Not Open Default Font 'Fixed'

Oh, bugger. I didn't even think to mention xfs; I thought the demon-ridden thing was installed by default. Time to fall on my sword, I guess.

Thank you fortran01! You just saved the day for my Kubuntu box. I did a dist-upgrade on Kubuntu Edgy, which had been working fine for over a week, and suddenly my Xorg was broken with this darn "default font fixed" fatal server error.

apt-get install --reinstall xfonts-base fixed it, and I was able to start Kubuntu with startx or rebooting.

I don't understand how u resolved this problem.. I still have the same problem about fixed fonts.. I checked all paths, the config is ok, xfs is installed... but the problem remains...

Re: Can't StartX-Could Not Open Default Font 'Fixed'

I had this same problem.

I did an upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10 and that broke gnome so I've been using XFCE. I did apt-get upgrade and then when I exited XFCE I got the "could not open default font 'fixed'" message.

Playing aroung with apt-get I noticed xserver-xorg wasn't installed !

I did apt-get install xserver-xorg and then GDM started fine (still no gnome !)

Cheers
