Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

Breezy is the best distro I have installed so far. Have tried Mandriva 9.0 and 10.2 LE with many devices not detected. Then I experimented with Knoppix 4.0.2 LiveCD, Ubuntu 5.10rc LiveCD. And, now Breezy Badger 5.10 .. the best experience so far on my Acer 4061. Have decided to throw out WinXP.

However, the sound of silence is a let down. I hope someone has a simple explanation and an easy solution for a newbie Linux convert to fix this bug.

Re: Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

I have the same problem on a Travelmate 3000. I have already posted a thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75979 It is probably something with the drivers... I wonder about upgrading to the 2.6.13 kernel...

Have you checked if everything got unmuted? Have you run alsaconf already from a terminal as superuser or root?

Re: Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

Here is the message I get when I try to run amixer as root:

Code:
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
and when I run alsamixer:

Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
Guess it's not unmuted channels...

Re: Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=412151#post412151

This is about the 5th post thismorning I've read on the Intel HD Audio (ICH6) sound not working. It seems the issue is much more widespread than previously thought, and should have been fixed before releasing breezy.

Yes, I have un-mute all settings via alsamixer. Anyway, on Breezy, there is no superuser or root access by default. The first "user" is the "admin" as well. And there's no "alsaconf" command in Breezy.

Can you please elaborate. Thanks.

Question Re: Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

Hello, iNerdSure,
have you resolved your problem or not? I'm now having exactly the same problem with a TravelMate 4061NLMi, and I want it solved. If you are already able to play music in Linux on your laptop, i'd really appreciate if you told us what you've done to achieve that...

regards,
newly registered RQ

Re: Breezy on Acer laptop no sound!

I still have this problem too, but the only thing I've tried to do to solve it is to download and recompile the 2.6.13 kernel, all settings as in the 2.6.12 kernel shipped with Breezy as default.

I've heard rumours about a bug related to Intel HDA controllers in the ALSA 1.0.9b package (the one that comes with Breezy), so maybe an upgrade to 1.0.10rc2 may do the trick... I don't know.

If someone get this soundcard to work, please post a walkthrough or something to let us others know.
