HOWTO: Fingerprint reading in Ubuntu with fprint

Maybe a stupid question, but I haven't found the answer in this tread:
Is it possible to change the finger in the login screen?
So far it is always asking me for my left middle finger, and I'd prefer to (always) use my right index finger for authentication.

I have a problem with fprint.
Generally it works fine. But!
In gdm screen I click on my username and there is a text: "Could not locate any suitable fingerprints matched with available hardware."
So I followed troubleshooting and... it didn't work... :/
But!
When I login with my password and do something that requires fprint it works fine /sudo something/.
Weird.
But!
I login in console /ctrl+alt+f1/ with my username and password /again could not locate fingerprint/ and switched to gdm. Clicked on my username and wow! "Scan right index finger on AuthenTec AES1610"
I swiped and logged on.

Could someone help me?

Is it possible that you installed with an encrypted home directory? If so this make sense as nothing has allowed the decryption of your home until you have logged in once. (I may have misunderstood your issue, though.) If that's the case, I'm not sure what the resolution is, but that might help identify a work-around.

Thanks for the HOWTO. It worked for me on Karmic x86_64 with an AES2501.

I'm fairly new to configuring PAM, and I'm having one issue I haven't resolved yet. Is there a way to specify that fprint should only be allowed to authenticate a local user? I ssh into my box over a local network sometimes, and it doesn't make much sense to have to walk into the room to scan my finger.

I believe I've seen this before, and I could add a copy of common-auth named common-auth-no-fingerprint with fprint removed for inclusion in the /etc/pam.d/sudo file, but it would make more sense to force fprint authentication to always fail for a remote user.

But i have a problem, i HAVE to use a fingerprint authentication now to login. Is there no way where i can use either the fingerprint authentication or the password?
