Can I assume that rebooted between those two commands? If so then you'll need to look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and kern.log for error messages.

The only error that I wonder about it the one about buffers. The rest of it looked okay. What are you getting in kern.log when the driver loads?

I'm also wondering if you're actually using Breezy's 8.16.20 driver or a new one? I'm not sure that I'd even try using the older driver because it predates the X-series cards by quite a while, I believe. You could give the latest driver a try.

The /var/log/kern.log file is completly blank, not a letter on it.

The latest driver from ATI is Version: 8.22.5 I guess I could give it a try after I hear from you about my /var/log/kern.log file being blank.

    Thanks mlomker

Re: HOW-TO: ATI fglrx driver 8.16.20

    Hi

First thanks for a great howto. Running it with the latest fglrx driver now here is the o/p of fglrx info

    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY RADEON 9600 Generic
    OpenGL version string: 2.0.5642 (8.22.5)

    running though fgl_glxgears
I get a crappy ouput and this error message

FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Read-only file system)
    __FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!
    fglX11AllocateManagedSurface: __FGLTexMgrCreateObject failed!!

anyone knows what might cause that or how to fix it. Is it an option i need to enable in xorg.conf?

Running ati 9600 64 MB on a notebook here

    Thanx again for your help

I searched Google and found quite a few references. Look at this.

Oh my I am really lazy or do not know how to efficienly use google yet. Thank you for putting me on the right path I found a

    tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults,ro 0 0

line in my fstab file put there by the ati installer.

Just changed the defaults from defaults,ro to defaults. It was set to read only (do not know why though ) so the new line is

    tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

Now the installer also created the /dev/shm device which is owned by whoever installed the file so I had to change the ownership so it belongs to root and such that all user who can use video acceleration can use it.

    sudo chown -R root:video /dev/shm

ps /dev/shm is a directory and the R options to change ownership of all files under this directory

Now it is crazy getting 450 frms/sec with the fgl_glxgears

ps: perhaps a note in the howto can help other users like me who had this problem.

Now to look for a solution to the crapy output i get if i use the gdmflexiserver (new login) on my laptop.

ps gdmflexiserver -nl thought works (so works if using xnest but not if a new session is initiated)

This is happening to me as well. Xorg config file looked fine, fglrxinfo stated it was the ATI 9100 and dmesg |grep fglr gave no errors. But as soon as I run glxgears or throw in a DVD everything freezes but the mouse. I have the 2.6.12-10-386 kernel and ATI 9100 on board video. (Is it because it's on board video the problem?)

Re: HOW-TO: ATI fglrx driver 8.16.20

As I found, if you look on the ATI website, you'll see that the 9100 and 9100IGP are not supported for 3D by the FGLRX driver. Unfortunately, that means that the PC will just lock when you try to run GLX gears or anything else that relys on 3D rendering. To get a workable system you'll need to uninstall the driver and use the default ATI driver - which works, just not in 3D.
