    2) Tried both, both left me at a blinking _ . I also tried the "noapic nolapi" thing again and wrote down the error messages on the screen after the "OK, booting kernel...":
[4294671.514000] BIOS bug, local APIC #0 not detected!...
[4294671.566000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 3 of device 0000:00:00.0

Perhaps you can get more from them than I can...
    3) I wrote it down correctly on a sticky note, but I cut/pasted a misspelled version of it. Oh well, no biggie.
    1) Ok , try these options:
    Code:
    noapictimer
    OR

    Code:
    noapictimer irqpoll
    2) If the options above do not work you can use the 64bit version of Ubuntu (AMD64) and use "no_timer_check" which will work for sure.

    3) If you don't like Ubuntu 64bit you can try PCLinuxOS which is 32bit but doesn't seem to be affected by this bug (it uses noapic nolapic by default but it doesn't hang).
Another OS you could try is OpenSuse

Yes! "noapictimer irqpoll" worked! Thanks for your help, and sorry to bother you.

"noapictimer irqpoll" also worked for me--I had tried all the other suggestions to no avail. I'm running Breezy 32 bit (K7) on an MSI RS480 with an AMD Sempron 64-bit CPU. Thanks for all your help in squashing this rather nasty bug!

    did you try:
    Code:
    noapic nolapic
    OR
    Code:
    noapic acpi=noirq
What are the results with those options?

i have, they all delay the problem but not too well, I've tried everything in this thread and noapictimer irqpoll and noapictimer work the best but it still comes and goes

Re: HOWTO: Double Clock Speed Problem

Just thought I'd post my results for anyone with similar hardware...

    HP a1250n
    ATI XPress chipset
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    ATI X800 XL
    32-bit Ubuntu 5.10 with kernel 2.6.12-10-k7-smp

I tried every combination of solutions listed in this thread, and the only one that works is "noapic acpi=noirq"

    Hope this helps!
